Our Grants
Each year ROB awards educational grants to individuals in Tanzania to help them gain qualifications in the outdoor industry.
The trustees of ROB meet to review the years fundraising efforts and decide on which awards will be granted annually. We work closely with our African and industry partners to inform our decision making to ensure our supporter's donations are put to their very best use and to help the people who need them most.
Where appropriate the grants are advertised and applications reviewed by our team of volunteers in Tanzania.
Details of the grants we are offering in 2022 are listed below.
Guide Licence Training Scholarships.
From 2019 we have been funding a number of agreed places each year for local Tanzanians to complete their guide training at College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka. This programme takes 3 weeks and on successful completion leads to the award of the official guide's licence by the national park authority. The full course covers Mountain Ecology, First Aid Emergency Care and Wilderness Rescue and provides women with the essential guiding skills to become fully certified
The advertising, recruitment and selection process will be conducted by the college and our local Tanzanian trekking partner African Walking Company will be providing our awardees with all the equipment they need to camp for free at the college during the programme
Mountain Lioness Programme
From March 2020 Robertson Outdoor Bursary will be working in partnership with Exodus Travels Foundation, to sponsor 30 women over the next 3 years to complete their guide training. This exciting initiative which we are calling our Mountain Lioness Scholarship - was inspired by female guide Lucia Kivoi, nicknamed “lioness”, because of her pioneering spirit as a Senior Guide and woman, and previous ROB awardee, who helped to spearhead the acceptance of female porters on Kilimanjaro.
The modules taught over this three-week period, help women to gain their Guide License (an essential requirement for anyone wanting to guide in Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park).
